Tutorial 1: Crafting the Mobile Experience

Tutorial number 1 is full. No registrations are accepted anymore!

Full day.

The tutorial is completely new for Mobile HCI 2006. It is a combination of a set of lectures segments, demos, videos, hands-on exercises and group discussion.

Description

The rapid advances in mobile devices, services and applications, and the networks that support them pose significant challenges to mobile user interface design. The key to successfully design the forthcoming generation of mobile artifacts and services is to understand the user needs, the mobile context and the opportunities and barriers it presents, the network characteristics, the constraints of the mobile device, as well as having a solid approach for practically addressing these issues. This means that mobile interaction designers need to adopt new and innovative ways of thinking for creating a truly good user experience for mobile communication/information services. This tutorial is specifically designed for those who are interested in designing mobile services for size-constrained devices.  It is intended to appeal to a broad audience, such as designers, mobile service developers, network operators and service providers, usability specialists, and HCI researchers. Its content has been developed and refined by the instructors based on experience gained over a period of several years while they have been employed in the telecom industry's largest companies. The main elements taught by the tutorial include:

  • An understanding of what ‘mobile’ means when developing mobile services
  • Mobile design consideration for users, tasks and content
  • An improved ability to make user interface more easy/fun/quick-to-use
  • Tips and techniques for designing useful and usable services specifically for use in a mobile environment
  • Effective use of restricted screen space and minimalist input devices
  • Design of services that are tailored to the needs of the individual
  • Practical design experience through group exercises

    Target Audience

  • This tutorial is specifically designed for those who are interested in designing mobile services for size-constrained devices.  It is intended to appeal to a broad audience, such as designers, mobile service developers, network operators and service providers, usability specialists, and HCI researchers. The tutorial is intended for people with some experience in either user interface design or usability work. No advanced technical expertise required.

Tutorial 2: Institutionalizing Mobile User Experience: Key Success Factors, Strategic Positioning and Sustainable Organisational Implementations

    Full day.

The tutorial will include presentations, intructor led group discussions and collaborative group exercise sessions. The presentation part will include both theoretical concepts of the tutorial topic, and descriptions of the organisers’ practical experiences. The discussion and exercise part will include group work to designated problem statements and moderated discussions to foster the exchange of ideas.

     Desciption

This tutorial addresses strategic and organisational aspects of user experience work in companies, based on experiences in the mobile service industry. It focuses on the question of how to successfully set-up a Corporate User Experience Team in the areas of conflict between top management, marketing, sales, IT, customer service, and product development. Besides the presentation of general motivations and drivers for corporate user experience work and several concepts for doing so, the tutorial in particular represents the authors’ experiences in setting-up such a team, discusses key success factors, and the role of selected strategic concepts (ROI, BSC). The organisers will provide an insight into Austria’s largest telecom & mobile service providing company – mobilkom austria – and the role of user experience there within. The tutorial provides attendees with the information required in order to be successful in establishing user experience work, and with insights and ideas for strategic positioning.

The tutorial’s main objectives are the provisioning of useful information regarding the setup of a Corporate User Experience Team, key success factors in doing so, and strategic concepts for positioning and establishing a sustainable role with an organisation. During discussions and group work, attendees will be asked to develop strategies, critically reflect on their experiences, and will be driven to uncover hidden areas of conflicts within corporations (with respect to user experience work).

In particular the following contents will be introduced in the tutorial: motivations and drivers for corporate user experience work, concepts for setting-up a corporate user experience team, the user experience team within the mobilkom austria (group) as a prototypical example, pilot projects to facilitate the strategic role of an user experience team, improving efficiency through strategic partnering, key success factors for setting-up a corporate user experience team, strategic concepts and positioning: return-on-investment and corporate balanced scorecard, lobbying and networking, a phase model for the institutionalization of user experience within mobile industry

     Target Audience

The course is designed for participants with intermediate skills. The tutorial is intended for everyone managing user experience and working on user experience activities within an organization or intending to do so in the future, especially in fast moving industries like the mobile industry (telecom companies, service providers, etc.), user experience consultants, project managers, and marketing managers and strategists. Attendees are expected to have a basic background in human-computer interaction, mobile human-computer interaction, usability engineering and user experience, as well as strategic thinking. In particular it is also intended for people trying to achieve organisational impact with their user experience activities.

     Instructors

Tobias Herrmann is Head of Team User Experience within the mobilkom austria, Austria’s largest telecom and mobile service providing company with 3.2 million customers. The team’s scope covers all fields of activities, including Usability/User Experience consultancy, “classical” Usability/workflow engineering, e-prototyping or conception of User Experience models and performance measurements. Furthermore, the User Experience Team – positioned as a competence center within the mobilkom austria group – accounts for all types of Usability/User Experience specific topics within the subsidiary companies VIPnet (Croatia) and SI.mobil (Slovenia).

Tutorial 3: Designing user Interfaces for future mobile applications and services- a complete interaction and visual design process walkthrough

Tutorial number3 is full. No registrations are accepted anymore!

    Full day.

The tutorial will include presentations, instructor-led material and collaborative group design exercises. The instructors will walk-through their design process as a foundation to the day and show examples of their mobile UI designs. Design exercises will enable attendees to work together on a half-day project to create their own mobile phone UI concept.

    Description

The theme of the tutorial is to provide a practical walkthrough of our mobile industry-based design processes and methods. The tutorial focuses on combining interaction design and visual design disciplines to create new mobile applications and services. The approach and content is based on our extensive project experience with a range of international clients. The tutorial will start with presentations by the instructors, covering user-centred design and visual design for mobile user interfaces. This will be followed by an interactive discussion, where the audience can find out more from the instructors about designing in a real industry environment. The second half of the tutorial will enable the attendees to work in groups on their own design concept as a team. The design exercises will use design tools such as concept brainstorming, concept sketching, personas, scenarios, visual design considerations, paper prototyping. The final part of the tutorial will include design review presentations by each group. The instructors will review the designs with the larger group and all can discuss.

    Target Audience

The tutorial is aimed at introductory to intermediate level attendees. It will appeal to anyone who wants to understand a UI design process used to create applications and services for the mobile phone marketplace.

Some participants may be newcomers to the field, others may be designers, developers and researchers who already design products or research mobile UI as part of their work.
Developers and designers: An opportunity to see processes and work by other designers in the industry and compare approaches.

Students and researchers: An opportunity to understand and interact with industry-based designers in the mobile UI design field.
